Chattanooga Exterior Car Detailing — Clay Bar, Polish, Real Protection

A real exterior detail removes what a car wash leaves behind — bonded pollen, swirl marks, industrial fallout — then protects the paint with wax or sealant. We come to you. Flat quote before we start.

When You Need an Exterior Detail

Swirl marks that catch light at every angle. Water spots that reappear hours after a wash. Paint that looks dull even after a rinse. A chalky, oxidized hood. These are signs that a standard car wash — automated or manual — isn't addressing the actual problem. Chattanooga's spring pollen season is particularly aggressive. Pollen bonds to clear coat and bakes in with the heat. A standard wash removes loose pollen but leaves the embedded layer, which continues to degrade the paint surface. Clay bar treatment is the only way to pull bonded contamination from the paint — and it's a standard step in every exterior detail we do here, because in this climate, skipping it means the wax you just applied is sitting on a contaminated surface.

How Exterior Detailing Works

Step 1 — Two-bucket hand wash: We wash with the two-bucket method — one bucket clean soap, one bucket rinse water — so grit never goes back on the paint. Wheels and wheel wells get separate brushes and degreasers.

Step 2 — Clay bar decontamination: A clay bar is worked across every panel with lubricant. It physically pulls bonded contamination — pollen, industrial fallout, tree sap, overspray — from the paint. You'll feel the difference immediately: the surface goes from rough to glass-smooth.

Step 3 — Polish: A machine polisher with the appropriate pad and compound removes swirl marks and light oxidation, restoring depth and gloss to the clear coat. Heavier defects require a more aggressive cut — we assess and tell you what's realistic before starting.

Step 4 — Wax or paint sealant: A quality carnauba wax or synthetic paint sealant is applied to protect the freshly prepared surface. Sealants last longer in Chattanooga's humid climate — typically 4–6 months of real protection. Ceramic coating is available as a longer-term alternative.

What Does Exterior Detailing Cost?

A full exterior detail — hand wash, clay bar, polish, and wax or sealant — runs $150–$300 in Chattanooga. Compact vehicles are at the lower end; full-size trucks and SUVs with heavier oxidation push toward $300. Paint correction (for more significant defects) is a separate service starting at $300. The estimate is free — see our full pricing guide.

What's the difference between a car wash and exterior detailing?

A car wash removes surface dirt with water and soap. Exterior detailing goes further: clay bar treatment pulls bonded contamination that a wash can't touch, polishing addresses actual paint defects, and a protective layer goes on at the end. The result lasts months, not days.

How long does exterior detailing take?

A standard exterior detail takes 2–4 hours depending on vehicle size and paint condition. Heavier correction work takes longer. We give you an honest time window at booking.

Does clay bar treatment damage paint?

No — done correctly with proper lubricant, clay bar is safe on all paint types including clear coat and matte finishes. It removes bonded surface contamination that washing leaves behind. It's a standard step in professional detailing, not an aggressive treatment.
